CATS GALLERY
August 2007, Wellington Street Theatre, Kingston ON, Canada

Rather than go with the traditional airbrushed unitards for the cast, the director wanted a look more reminiscent of the junkyard setting of the show. Which lead to creating the costumes primarily from second hand clothing donated by the cast, crew, and members of the community.

Some designs stayed very close to the London and Broadway originals, others differed greatly. The use of second-hand clothing for the base of the costumes was an interesting two-way street. Sometimes particular items in the clothing pile served as the inspiration for a particular Cat's look with the rest of the costume built around it - at other times the design came first and many an old shirt, pair of pants, or skirt was ripped apart, re-sewn, dyed, painted, or otherwise man-handled into achieving the desired costume.
